Bender in a Bun Currywurst Style Recipe

By George Egg

Paying Homage to a Wimpy Classic

Have you heard of the Wimpy classic Bender in a Bun? This turns your typical hot dog into a burger! One of Wimpy’s famous items, a frankfurter, sliced part-way along its length so it could be formed into a circle and placed in a burger bun with cheese and ketchup. Taking inspiration from this icon of the 80s English fast food scene this is the Bender re-made but using a Bratwurst and flavoured like a Currywurst.

Berlin Flavours transform a classic

Adding the flavours of a Berlin currywurst is ingenious. In fact, we believe this may transform any dish. George makes a quick and simple curry sauce compiled of ketchup, mustard, siracha, curry powder and browning sauce. However an alternative to this would be to simply use a ready made curry ketchup and add a sprinkle of curry powder on top. Either way, the currywurst flavours really transform this classic Bender in a Bun

Recreated in minutes

Eating a burger can be seen as easier than eating a hot dog, so this combines the two. Nice and easy to hold, super tasty and extremely quick to create. In the time it takes to cook a Bratwurst you will have recreated this classic dish. So, that’s around 6 minutes you have to wait until you can devour this amazing bender in a bun with a currywurst twist. But the twists do not have to stop there, you could also have a spicy version or full German theme and incorporate Sauerkraut into the mix. But lets start with George Eggs currywurst version, give that a try and then see what you can come up with next!

Ingredients

  • 1 Bratwurst XXL
  • 1 White Onion
  • 50 ml Tomato Ketchup
  • 35 ml German Mustard
  • 10 ml Hot Sauce Siracha or alternative
  • Sprinkle Curry Powder
  • Dash Gravy Browning
  • 1 Soft White Bap
  • Dash Fresh Coriander

Instructions

  • Slice the Bratwurst only halfway (as per the video) through the sausage and use a cookie cutter to form the sausage into a circle.
  • Fry on both sides until hot and a nice colour is achieved (around 6 minutes).
  • While it’s cooking, slice the onion and add it to the pan alongside the sausage, you are looking to create essentially ‘burger onions’ like you’d get at a classic British burger stall, so just fried until golden amber and sweet.
  • Mix together the tomato ketchup, a little mild German mustard, a big pinch of curry powder, and a splash of hot sauce to create the curry sauce, and to get the right colour a little dash of gravy browning.
  • Once cooked place the now circular Bratwurst in a toasted white bun, top it with the onions, curry sauce and a big sprinkling of mild curry powder before the bun lid goes on.
