Coronation Chicken Schnitzel

By George Egg

Coronation Chicken Schnitzel

A special tribute to the classic Coronation Chicken that has been a favourite in the UK since 1953, we present George Egg’s take: the Coronation Chicken Schnitzel! This is a great quick pub-grub style recipe, and would make a great addition to any menu for 2023.

Long Live The King

With the Coronation of his Majesty King Charles III now scheduled for Saturday the 6th of May 2023, and the special Bank Holiday now “Proclaimed” for the 8th of May 2023, we know a lot of you might be getting your menu prep in early… 70 years on from the creation of the original dish, we think this new German twist on the Great British classic will be a winner.

Which Came First – Coronation Chicken or George Egg?

Coronation Chicken was reportedly perfected over the course of a whole month ahead of the Queen’s Coronation Banquet in June 1953. George Egg came about a lot later, with his (rather ironically titled) “Anarchist Cook” show launching at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2015.

Monarchist Dish, Anarchist Cook

Why did we ask this self-proclaimed comedy-cooking anarchist to create a monarchy themed dish? We didn’t. George came up with this tasty fit-for-a-king snack without any prompting at all. Find out more about George Egg here and see if you can figure out his motivations for yourself…

A Simple Coronation Snack Made Easy

All the original flavours of a classic Coronation Chicken combined with a crisp Schnitzel, served as a burger in a Pretzel Bun, or just with salad. This tasty treat is super easy to prepare, and makes a perfect themed option for your Coronation Bank Holiday menu.

Easy to Adapt For Inclusivity

Make this snack suitable for other diets quickly and easily, just with some minor changes… Substitute the Chicken Schnitzel with a Vegan Schnitzel, vegan mayo and use a Vegan Brioche Bun, for a quick Coronation plant-based option. You can also make the burger a salad, tossing your sliced Schnitzel in along with the other ingredients.
